Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born April 4th, 1972. Scott was raised as an all-only daughter by her grandmother. Scott attended Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following the completion of her studies, Scott enrolled into Temple University. While working two jobs and studying secondary education, she continued her studies. The hope was to become a English high school teacher. This dream was however cut short when after three years of studying and working as an aide to teachers, she was kicked out of the college. The path she took to her career started as a spoken-word performer and performing live at poetry readings. She then teamed up with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. You Got Me is the result of their collaboration. The singer performed at a Roots concert. Then, she began working with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She also gained experience as an actor during her participation in the Canada tour of the Broadway musical Rent. Also, she was the first signee to Hidden Beach Recordings.
